Mid-Del Swim stays focused; prepares for conference meet

Mid-Del swimming focused on improvement this week as they participated in the Casady-McGuinness Invitational.

The swim team competed Saturday in the invite at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center in a meet that featured over 40 swim teams between the girls and boys.

Swimmers went up against talents from large schools, public and private, from Texas and even 6A schools from around the area to see how they would stack up against tougher competition.

The coaching staff focused their swimmers on winning individual heats. They also set out to improve mechanics in the water to prepare themselves for the upcoming conference meets and their last home meet of the year.

Del City just one victory away from district title

The Del City Eagles face only two challenges on their road to dual state and district champion: the Deer Creek Antlers and the Carl Albert Titans.

They crushed the first of these two 51-15 in Tuesday night’s match at Deer Creek.

The Deer Creek duel started out rough for the Eagles as Zeke Lora dominated Tanner Cole with quick accurate movements that often ended on the floor.

Eventually Cole ran out of steam and was defeated 8-0 bringing the team 5-0 in favor of the Antlers.

The next match didn’t go much better as Deer Creek’s Zack Reed pushed Patrick Cocklin all over the mat. Cocklin did manage to score 1 point with 1:29 seconds left in the third period on an escape. However it was too little to late as Reed won 5-2.

Jones vs. Harrah

Last Friday, both Jones Longhorns’ basketball teams took on two highly touted Harrah Panther squads in two games. Game one was decided by turnovers while the second was a close call that could have ended very differently.

When the girls squared off, 4A’s No. 3 ranked Panthers won, 42-21.

The Lady Longhorns started the game with 7 turnovers. Normally, turnovers are a sure sign of a blow-out game, but at the end of the first half, the Lady Panthers’ lead was only 17-11.

The third quarter is where the game took a definite turn for Harrah. The Lady Panthers scored 14 to out-score the Lady Longhorns handily, who only scored 4 points in the quarter.

Rose Colored Glasses

I bet I can tell you how your first encounter with new Rose State Athletic Director Joey DaVault will go more or less.

He’ll brag to you about the lovely wellness center and its top notch equipment.

He’ll proudly state his love for the college and the kids that roam its campus.

The athletic department’s newest leader might even share a lit bit of his vision for the future and how it will result in real educational benefits for athletes and the student body alike.

And, you’re going to know it’s genuine. Because somewhere not too far off from the opening handshake, maybe tucked in neatly between the wellness center and the students, he’s going to ask you about yourself.

Titans, Eagles fare well in hometown Wade Invitational

Both Del City and Carl Albert wrestlers fought hard earning titles this past weekend.

A total of three Titans and seven Eagles took home medals, ranging in places from third to sixth.

Shelton first pinned Tyler Kittles of Noble in the first period, then battled My Nguyen of Putnam City North for the bronze medal. He ended up on top with a final score of 8-5.

Likewise, Chappell took on Gage Hendrix from Putnam City North for the chance to be on the podium beating him 5-3. Next, Chappell defeated Caleb Blakely of Noble by a major decision.

Lady Wildcats beyond resilient en route to Sooner Christian title

Resilience was the key last weekend as the Destiny Christian girls’ basketball team fought through rough patches to end up with the Sooner Christian Conference title.

The Lady Wildcats started their two-day championship run at Liberty Christian in Shawnee against All-Conference/Tournament player Tat Ndekwe and the Lawton Christian Lady Crusaders.

Ndekwe dominated early with 10 points and 4 rebounds. However, Destiny Christian’s freshman guard Caiti Ferguson was more than up to the task of matching Ndekwe.

Ferguson started 2-2 from the field leading to 7 points with teammate Brittany Anderson adding in 4 more points. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats were hanging on to a 1-point lead.

Despite all of Ndekwe’s work on the glass, Destiny Christian still maintained an 11-6 advantage in rebounding. Neither team could find the range with the Lady Wildcats going 4-12 while the Lady Crusaders shot 6-16.

Destiny Christian Wildcats win basketball conference

Winning a conference is never easy, but the Destiny Christian boys basketball team made it look effortless after taking two wins and the Sooner Christian Conference crown.

The Wildcats (16-2) continued an impressive season last weekend that’s seen three players eclipse the 1,000 career point mark.

On Friday, they started their march to the conference championship at Liberty Academy in Shawnee against the Life Christian Eagles.

Any ideas the Eagles had of making this a quality matchup by scoring first were immediately dismissed by the Wildcats.

Destiny Christian’s press took total control of the matchup with their full court press on their way to a commanding 23-0 run.

Bomber basketball rebounds from loss; takes consolation championship

Coming off their lopsided victory over cross-town rival Del City, the Midwest City boys’ basketball team (8-0) took the consolation championship and a fifth place finish in the Putnam City Invitational.

The 15th edition of the PCI wasn’t kind to start for 6A’s No. 2 ranked Bombers as the tournament got underway last Thursday at Putnam City West.

Midwest City saw the home school Oklahoma City Storm led by TCU commit  guard Chauncey Collins in day one, and Collins wasted no time showing why he was last year’s National Homeschool Player of the Year.

Collins followed 8 first quarter points with 13 more in the second quarter going 4-7 from the 3-point line in that time span. The demoralizing part for the Bombers wasn’t Collins hitting 3’s but the kind that he was taking and knocking down.

Local tournament weekend

The Lady Titans (6-1) survived an up and down tournament to finish third in the 26th Annual Lady Jaguar Classic.

Carl Albert Head Coach Tim Price was a bit worried going into the three day tournament, which started last Thursday, because of the long holiday lay-off for his girls.

The No. three ranked team in 5A hadn’t been on the court since a blowout victory against El Reno on Dec 20.

Working through Adversity
It’s been an up and down year so far for the Del City Lady Eagles with a 3-5 record but for senior guard Alexus Ochoa-Dockins, it’s been mostly down. A scrimmage against Star Spencer ended the 18 year old’s season before it could even begin when she tore her ACL and meniscus on a layup attempt. This effectively ended her Del City basketball career. Or did it?
