The Mid-Del swim team had quite the week with a home meet and splitting up for their conference championship meets.
Midwest City and Del City were first to swim Thursday in the Mid-State Conference Championship.
Although neither team fields a large enough roster to truly take home the conference championship, some individuals did show out.
Midwest City seniors Sarah Brown and Kenny Dennison had nice showings. Brown took sixth in 200-yard freestyle and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle while Dennison took 11th in the 200-yard freestyle and 14th in the 100-yard freestyle.
Lone Del City swimmer Greyson Wolf had two good swims taking fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle.
“Midwest City did a good job. They’re a small team so it’s difficult to place very high but we had some good swim,” said Mid-Del Head Coach Kirk Norman.
Home Meet
On the next night, the entire team came back together for a home meet against Mustang and Harrah.
Carl Albert took third overall in the meet with the Carl Albert girls taking second and boys taking third.
They took it easy at the meet due to having to swim next in the conference meet yet still had some fun and good showings.
“We let the kids pick whatever they wanted to swim because it was really an enjoy ourselves, have a little bit of reprieve meet in between the two conferences,” said Norman.
The Carl Albert boys were led by two first place finishes by Jaedon Roe in the 200-yard freestyle and Alex Lawrence in the 100-yard breaststroke. The boys relay team of Roe, Lawrence, Sydney White and Tim Hyland also took a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Carl Albert girls had a first place finish by Alli Azzano in the 50-yard freestyle, as well as the team of Jen Litchfield, Brooklyn Toney, Rachel Cook and Azzano taking first in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Midwest City’s Hannah Hill took second in the 100-yard freestyle with Kenny and Justin Dennison taking second and third respectfully in the 400-yard freestyle.
Suburban Conference Meet
The week culminated Tuesday when Carl Albert swam for the Suburban Conference Championship.
Some mishaps and near misses stopped them from taking home the title, but bright spots were abound for Carl Albert as the boys took third and the girls took second losing to Shawnee by only 10 points.
“It was a disappointing loss,” said Norman. “We maybe weren’t as prepared as we could have been. We took some time off last week to enjoy the week a little bit to get ready for conference and maybe that wasn’t the best decision.”
Still, the girls started off hot with a 200-yard medley relay win by the team of Cook, Litchfield, Toney and Azzano with a time of 2:08:39.
Azzano, Cook and Litchfield then took second in back-to-back-to-back events: the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, and 50-yard freestyle respectively.
Ashlyn Hanlon didn’t place in the 500-yard freestyle, but she gave it all she had with a fourth place finish and looked to be utterly exhausted after the race.
Litchfield and Azzano would nab two more second place finishes. Litchfield took silver in the 100-yard butterfly while Azzano did as well in the 100-yard backstroke.
The only individual win the girls had on the day came from Rachel Cook, who took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:18.94.
“I had a great time just being here with my teammates and feel the success with each other,” said Cook. “In our relays we bond so much and it’s just really fun.”
The bonding paid off for the relay team with another first place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:17.92, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome Shawnee.
Meanwhile for the boys, it was a meet full of fireworks.
It started when the relay team comprised of Roe, Hyland, Lawrence and White took third in the 200-yard medley relay. However, controversy arose over if Piedmont, who came in second, swam in the incorrect order which would disqualify them.
It couldn’t be determined if they had or not and their second place finish stood.
Next, Lawrence took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a surprise and hard earned third place finish from teammate Ryan Wade.
Lawrence continued to excel defending his 500-yard freestyle title with a time of 5:06.54.
“We just tried to stay ahead of the pack and win,” said Lawrence of his two victories.
Roe and Hyland continued the strong performance taking first in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly respectively.
Danger struck when Roe missed the wall on his first turn in the 100-yard freestyle. The mishap cost him and he took second place.
“Everyone’s going to make a mistake. It’s how we learn from those mistakes and overcome them in the future that makes us great,” said Norman of the mishap.
The death knell for the chances of the boys to win the meet came when White fell to fourth in his 100-yard backstroke and the relay team took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
“Swimming is a sport of details and people don’t think that because they swim in their backyard and as long as they don’t drown, they think they’re doing fine,” said Norman. “To take 59 seconds out of your day and do it all exactly right is pretty difficult, so I don’t get down on them for making mistakes because fortunately we get another chance.”
Still, Mid-Del can be proud of a strong effort this week as they look to senior night Friday, Jan. 31 at Rose State College.
