Del City wrestling won its 18th district title last Thursday after defeating Carl Albert at home.

The Eagles had a chance to clinch the Class 5A District 4 title in front of their fans in the John Smith Fieldhouse, and they didn’t disappoint with a dominating victory.

The Eagles took down the Titans with force with a final score 63-10 in their dual last week after claiming 6 pins over Carl Albert.

In the first match of the day, Carl Albert’s Logan Shelton (106) beat Zeke Lara taking him down in the third period and earning a near fall of three.

Then, Gary Stice (126) took a fall by Garrett Chappell from Carl Albert in three minutes and 32 seconds after Chappell had reversed Stice twice.

After those two, the matches began to turn in the favor of the Eagles.

Both Clayton Lamb (132) and Dalton Addington (152) of Del City pinned their opponents in under three minutes. Lamb faced Bryce Smith, and had him pinned within 30 seconds after the beginning of the second period. Addington took on RT Sherman, where Addington reversed Sherman and pinned him in the second period as well.

Ray Merriman (138) and Kevin Figueroa (160) also pinned their men in almost four minutes. Merriman beat Chris Fairbairn in the second period after gaining a reverse then keeping him down until the referee blew the whistle just before the period ended.

Figueroa got an escape and took down Braxton Black in the second period yet again. At 145, Gavin Millhouse beat Nikko Bernard with a final score of 13-6 earning the final point through an escape.

Matt Lamb (182) took Carl Albert’s Austin Grantham down in the third period, where he had earned 8 points over him in the first four minutes. Lastly, just as the first period came to a close, Nate Daniels (195) dominated Ashton Umphrey in 1:54.

Del City Head Coach Ronnie James was proud of his kids after the match for checking off a goal on their list.

“The kids have wrestled well this year and reached one of their goals to make it back to dual state for the 18th time in school history,” said James of the big victory.

Del City added to a great week of wrestling by winning the Piedmont Tournament last Saturday. Del City wrestler Clayton Lamb was honored with most outstanding wrestler for his work over the weekend.

Del City takes on Norman Jan. 30 at home while Carl Albert competes in the Chickasha Tourney Jan. 31 through Feb. 1.
