The Midwest City wrestling team beat the Carl Albert wrestling team in six out of eight matches to win the dual 49-21.

“Just keep building,” said CA wrestling coach Curt Hodges of the effort, “[Carl Albert’s] getting better and we’ve got to be more consistent. We’re kind of up and down at times.”

Coach Hodges added his kids “tapered off” against their opponents, which led to a tendency to give up points late in their matches.

“We’ve got to go out and earn it,” said Hodges.

Meanwhile, Midwest City had a strong showing in this dual.

The Bombers started off their scoring with the first match of the day when they sent Drew Wilson out to take on Carl Albert’s Logan Shelton. Shelton never got control as Wilson powered through ending to take the match on a major decision with a score of 9-1.

Next, Carl Albert’s Michael Moody (120 pounds) faced off against Midwest City’s Isaiah Armstrong. Moody was a bright spot on the night for Carl Albert as he out-hustled Armstrong by quickly scoring and running around his opponent. Moody won the match on a decision 10-6.

The Titans’ Bryce Smith (126) and Bombers’ Marquez Edwards battled it out. They stayed close for almost three full periods before Edwards edged out Smith with one second on the clock as Edwards held Smith to the mat for a take down. Edwards won by three points scoring a 5-2 decision for his team.

Next, Garrett Chappell (138) scored Carl Albert points with his quick and aggressive style against Midwest City’s Micah Smith. Smith looked like he might make a come back as Chappell ran out of steam in the third period, but the lead was too large as Chappell held on to take the match on a decision 12-5

Chance Wilmoth of Midwest City made quick work of his Carl Albert opponent Nikko Bernard as he pinned him in just under two minutes in the first round.

Next, Carl Albert sent R.T. Sherman (160) to take on Midwest City’s Evan Wilson. After just over two minutes, Wilson followed his teammate’s example and pinned Sherman. Midwest City was starting to swing the momentum in their favor.

Midwest City’s Larry Boatwright and Carl Albert’s Braxton Black had the longest match of the night. Several times the match had to be stopped due to blood spewing from Black’s nose. Boatwright left with a little blood on his jersey and another win by decision for his team beating Black 16-9.

Last but not least Ashton Umphrey (195) from Carl Albert and Patrick Clason from Midwest City took the mat. The match seemed all but over when Clason injured his knee mid-match, but he insisted on continuing and went on to win the match by a decision 8-3.

“It’s my senior season I can’t let something stop me,” said Clason after the match of his resilience.

Midwest City coach Cory Wilson was pleased with his team’s effort in the 49-21 win.

“[They did] pretty good. Everybody did really well,” said Wilson

Next, the Bombers will head to Norman this weekend for tournament action.
