State tournament format to change for 6A, 5A

by Tim Farley
“This will have a major impact for everyone,” he said. “Baseball is meant to be played in a series, not just one game. If a team gets some luck, they can win a state title with one good pitcher. ‘Boys of Spring’ swing into action

by Tim Farley

Choctaw baseball skipper Mark Craft knows his 2012 squad hardly resembles last year’s state tournament team, and he’s using pre-season scrimmages to work out the kinks.

Heading into the season opener, Craft has six seniors that return to the lineup. It’s not the same lineup without Tanner Hessman, Austin Davis and hard-hitting Ty Ash, who graduated last year.

Seniors filling the lineup this season include first baseman Matt Richardson, third baseman J.J. Whitney, leftfielder Reggie Wright, centerfielder Tyler Rapp, rightfielder Ryan Blue and catcher J.T. Baker. Two other seniors who will see action include infielder Kyle Garcia and pitcher-outfielder Chip Anderson.

Still, the weaknesses of the team are the middle infielder positions, and the pitching staff, which was diminished by graduation last year.
