The Lady Bombers, now 25-0, will now face off again with rival Norman, the team they defeated in 2010 for the state championship. Midwest City has swept the Tigers the past nine in a row and will tip-off for the area championship tonight at 6:30 at Harrah High School. The Bombers dropped Norman four times last season alone, and the last time the Lady Tigers tripped up Midwest City was in 2008 when Mariah White went down with a knee injury. White, now at Kansas State, was an early recipient of the Big 12’s Player of the Week award this season.
“Norman’s post game isn’t what it was this year,” Midwest City head coach Art Bode said. “But, their guard play is excellent. It (tonight’s contest) depends on how much they pack the lane and how our guards will stack up.”
Midwest City didn’t shoot well in the first quarter in which Yukon actually won, 11-7.
“In the second quarter, our defensive intensity picked up,” Bode said. “We started getting up and denying passes. Reagan (Widener) and Adrianna (White) did a good job pressuring the ball.”
Ashley Clark led the way with 17 points, tallying nine in the second quarter.
BOMBING BOYS
Later on Feb. 26, the Bomber boys rode Trael Colbert’s 26 points for a 49-40 regional championship victory over Lawton. The Bombers take on Putnam City at 6:30 Friday at Choctaw High School for a chance to make the state tournament.
In Tim Stogsdill’s first season with the Del City boys, the Eagles clipped Stillwater 57-53 in overtime for a regional championship inside the John Smith Field House Feb. 26. Del City drummed Edmond North 63-34 in the opener and will venture to Sand Springs at 6:30 p.m. Friday to face off with Tulsa Union for a chance at an area championship crown.
The Lady Eagles will have to scratch back through the consolation bracket after falling by a bucket 53-51 to Enid at home in the regional final. Del City dumped Bixby 64-52 in game one and will take on Sapulpa at 8 o’clock tonight at Catoosa High School.
ABRUPT ENDING
At Edmond Memorial on Feb. 24, the Choctaw Lady Yellowjackets fell 64-56 in three overtimes to Putnam City to have their season come to an abrupt end.
In the early going, Lady Jacket Jasmine Sievert was intercepting passes and led Choctaw on an 11-0 run for an 11-3 lead. She hit a gamehigh 18 points for the Yellowjackets.
But the Lady Pirates and 6-3 Oklahoma State signee LaShawn Jones would not go away. Despite Choctaw garnering their largest lead of the game at 29-20 in the third period on a Kylee Hicks to Sievert pass-score, Jones stepped up and started swatting shots and the Lady Yellowjackets missed numerous free throws.
Choctaw shot 2-for-7 from the line in the fourth period and 2-for-8 in the combined auxiliary stanzas, while Jones rejected four shots in the final OT to preserve the win. She led all scorers with 26 points.
WIN-WIN
It was a win-win weekend for Carl Albert basketball, as both clubs racked up regional championships to advance in the winners bracket of area play this week.
For the Titans of Jay Price, their ticket to the area tourney was punched with back-to-back superb performances at Northwest Classen, where Carl Albert defeated the No. 2-ranked Knights, 67-56, in overtime after knocking off Guthrie in the regional opener. The Titans will face Titan Classic champion Lawton MacArthur in area action at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Yukon.
The Lady Titans had a much easier time of it on their home court, continuing their late-season surge as they blasted Duncan, 62-33, to claim the regional championship and set up a rematch with nemesis Shawnee in area play at 6:30 tonight at Norman North High School.
At Northwest, the youthful Titans got their second wind and romped to a 16-5 advantage in overtime as four players landed in double figures, topped by Dondre Brookins’ 14 points. Javeion Gray had 12, Antonio Marshall added 11 and Darrain Winston finished with 10. Salen Carson and Carlbe Erwin, who was the ringleader of the 66-55 win over Guthrie on Friday with 19 points, each had seven.
At the end of January, the Carl Albert ladies were 8-8 after a road loss to Deer Creek. Since that time, the Lady Titans have won eight of nine with their only loss last at home against Shawnee Feb. 19.
If the Feb. 26 performance against a talented Duncan team is any indication, the Lady Wolves may be in trouble as Tim Price’s troops uncorked their finest performance of the season, at both ends of the court.
The Lady Titans set the tone for the runaway with four treys in the opening period as senior Cherrell Price connected with 10 points to spark a 23-8 run. Price had two treys, while Aaliyah Sebock and Jordan Gilbert also connected from outside the arc. The Carl Albert press forced five straight turnovers midway through the period.
Price had 20 points and Sebock and Carter added 10 each with Gilbert contributing eight. Toni Cheadle had eight rebounds and blocked three shots and led the way in holding the Lady Demons to just two points in the third period.
