Oklahoma treasures celebrated

Oklahoma County recently honored two of our greatest citizens. Josephine Freede was celebrating her 85th birthday, and Al Snipes turned 91. That’s 176 years of combined achievement, older than our state, but you can’t measure the contributions these two outstanding citizens have made in years alone. Read more

Youth shelter move slated for October

The move had been stalled for the last three years because Midwest City officials had required the shelter to construct a driveway, handicapped parking and a parking lot at the new residence. Del City residents should hear sirens loud and clear

$199,000 to Total Radio in connection with the sirens. City officials had earmarked $250,000 for the project, City Manager Mark Edwards said. The remaining $51,000 will be used for more storm sirens “or we’ll check to see if there are any other emergency management services uses” for the surplus, the city manager said. Read more

‘04 roof collapse prompted call for new police station

Prior to that, Del City residents had rejected every attempt to build a new police headquarters. In the 1970s, the city sought funding to purchase property for a police station, but that didn’t work. In the late 1980s, voters turned down a bond issue that would have provided the money. Read more

Scouting makes sense for youngsters

Scouting in America recently turned 100 years old. The first Boy Scout troop in America may well have been founded in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, in 1909, a year before the organization was officially chartered in the United States.
