Bomber Classic soccer tournament kicks off

By Scott Wanish
The Class 5A state runner-up Carl Albert Lady Titans are already off on the right foot on the soccer field.

Carl Albert, 2-1, blanked 6A's Edmond Santa Fe 1-nil March 5 on Cierra Mitchell's goal off a set piece with 20 minutes remaining.

"That was a big win," Lady Titan head coach Jeremy Hymel said. "They (Edmond Santa Fe) were state runner-ups last year like us. They're definitely a top five team in 6A."

The Titans fell 3-0 to 6A's Putnam North, but did drop 5A's Guthrie 3-1 March 9 at the Midwest City Soccer Complex to start the season with a winning record.

All Mid-Del contests are being held there this season due to new artificial turf being installed at Carl Albert, Del City and Midwest City.

CLASSIC KICKOFF
The Bomber Classic will kick off at the soccer complex today. It begins at 3 p.m., as the three Mid-Del schools along with EastOC's Harrah compete in both boys and girls tournaments. The girls teams will begin play Thursday and the boys on Friday with the medal rounds scheduled for Saturday.

"I've got a lot of sophomores starting," Hymel added.

Starting sophomores for the Lady Titans include Makenzie Shelton, Mitchell, Taylor Files, Rachel Lindsay, Audriana Martens and Angelica Daggs.

"Our lone senior is Taylor Ellis, and she's good," Hymel said. "Her and Sarah Zeckser are my central defenders. Our outside backs are doing really well, too, in Alyssa Ramsey and Rachel Lindsay they're mean."

Jamie White, a junior, also starts.
In the conquest of Guthrie, Shelton and Chelsea Herman both scored on assists from Mitchell. Mitchell added the third and final goal.

GUTTING GUTHRIE
The 1-1 Titan boys also posted a shutout with a 2-0 triumph over Guthrie.

"Dillon Stupka scored our first goal. He's a baller; he's the real deal," Hymel said. "And, Jeremiah Reed is a beast at forward. He's fun to watch in soccer."

Reed is a stout linebacker from the football team.

The Midwest City Lady Bombers are 2-1 on the spring with a 3-2 victory over Del City and a 9-2 whitewash of Western Heights. Midwest City's lone loss came to Muskogee via 3-2 shootout in overtime.

Kayla Young popped in a corner kick on an assist from Lindsay Roberts in the 71st minute to boost the Lady Bombers to a 3-2 win over Del City.

Roberts hit the initial goals on assists from freshman Ronnie Johnson and junior Anissa Garcia, respectively.

"The team is very young this year," first-year Midwest City head coach Christa Howie said. "We only have one senior and three starting juniors. The rest of the varsity team is made up of sophomores and freshmen. So, the future looks good, but these kids need some experience. The district games are going to be tough this year, but the girls get better with every game."

GREAT EIGHT

Howie said Lindsey Roberts is the top scorer so far, with eight goals. She lists top defenders as junior Sarah Smith and Young, a sophomore.

In the pull-away victory over Western Heights, the Lady Bombers erupted for six goals in the latter half after leading just 3-2 at the break.

Roberts put the Jets away with three quick scores, two of which were assisted by Young. Johnson assisted the other, as Young posted the last three insurance goals. Roberts wound up with five of the nine goals, kicking in the first pair of the game. Johnson gave Midwest City the 3-2 lead on an assist from Young.
