Del City squads open with pair of victories

By Scott Wanish
Both Del City basketball squads have darted out to 2-0 records, culminating with a sweep of Westmoore on the road Dec. 3.

For the boys, Del City drilled Norman North 54-42 in Norman in the season opener on Nov. 30 and then kept the momentum rolling into Dec. 3's 57-44 trouncing of Westmoore.

"It was definitely a Mid-State (Conference) battle," Eagles skipper Tim Stogsdill said after knocking off the Timberwolves in Norman. "It was a good win for us; we'll take it on the road."

Del City's D was strapping, limiting Norman North to just a pair of field goals in the first half. The Eagles led 23-10 at the break as the T-Wolves managed just three points in the first quarter.

"We shot the ball well, jumped out on them and hit some shots," Stogsdill said. "We played a full-court man, played zone in spots and knocked some shots down."

Eagle A.J. Holland, a junior, led Del City with 20 points connecting on 10-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line. Teammates Drew Smith (10) and Brian Lulko (7) backed up Holland offensively.

On Dec. 3 at Westmoore, the Eagles again defeated a conference opponent by double digits on the road. Chris Stevenson equaled Holland's output of 20 points against Westmoore. Fellow Eagles Steffon Herd (12) and Drew Smith (10) rounded out double figures.

IRREGULAR ROUTE
For the Lady Eagles, senior Shafaun Jones went an irregular route in helping defeat the Lady Timberwolves by a 51-33 count.

"Shafaun Jones is normally deadly from outside with the 3-pointer,"  Del City head coach Karri Sears said following the 18-point victory. "She didn't have one on the night " all backdoor cuts and everything she hit was right off the glass coming in from the back side. She's a big threat and can hit from outside, but was slashing inside."

Sears will take the opening win either way, as Jones was the lone Del City player to reach double digits, leading all scorers with 19 points. She nailed 5-of-6 shots from the charity stripe.

Despite missing some layups that kept 6-foot Toni Smith from attaining a double-double, the solid post dominated the boards, pulling down 15 rebounds and finishing with 6 total points.

As a team, Del City posted 43 rebounds, controlling the paint. Teammate Mariah Jackson followed Smith with eight rebounds and 7 points. Teaira Rich dropped in 8 points, Dionna Collins connected on two huge 3s for 6 points " one coming in the second period and the latter in the fourth " and Monique Dan rounded out the scoring with a bucket. Fellow Lady Eagles Rukiya Turner (5 assists) and Kayla Rogers (3 steals) added to the victory.

In the Westmoore tilt, Del City exploded for 26 points in the third period and the Lady Eagles were on their way to lighting up the scoreboard for an 81-35 final.

Smith (18 points), Turner (14) and Rich (13) all landed in double figures in scoring.

The Del City boys play Chickasha this morning at 11:30 in the Harrah tournament, with the girls taking on Ponca City at 4 p.m. in Harrah as well.

BOMBER BATTLE
Last season, Norman North upset the Midwest City Bombers at home in the early portion of the campaign. Dec. 3, 2010, was a different evening inside the J.E. Sutton Field House.

Midwest City throttled the T-Wolves 20-6 in the third period and went on to a convincing 65-34 triumph to post its first win of the season.

"We played very, very well in the second half," Bomber coach Dewayne Bradley said. "We started scoring. So, when you score, you can press full more often. So, it kind of snowballed from that point on."

Bomber Cortrez Colbert was on fire, dropping in 9-of-13 2-point field goals leading all scorers with 19 points.

Greg Austin (13 rebounds, 3 steals) stood out on defense and sophomore guard Cornell Neal dished out four assists off the bench.

The defending state champion Lady Bombers bounced Norman North 70-42 behind Kaylon Williams' 15 points.

Both Midwest City teams will play at Southmoore on Tuesday.
