The Choctaw Yellowjackets overshadowed the competition at the Harrah quad wrestling meet on Dec. 2 by cruising to lopsided victories over Putnam North, Midwest City and host Harrah, respectively.
"That's the first time we had duals and it's good for the kids anytime you win three duals in a day," Choctaw head coach Benny Coleman said.
The Jackets crushed district foe Putnam North 63-18 in the early match. The Yellowjackets will later in the year have to go up against Yukon in order to advance to dual state, their biggest test within the district. It was the Millers who kept Choctaw out of dual state last season by pulling out a win in the very last match.
Rebuilding Midwest City fell to the Jackets 68-3 and Choctaw pummeled host Harrah in the late dual by a 48-14 count.
Yellowjacket Kaylob Klinger, just a freshman, won matches at 130 pounds in the early going. But in the nightcap, Klinger bumped up a weight. He had a vendetta against Harrah standout Austin Goyette at the 135-pound slot. Goyette defeated Klinger in a preseason tournament so the hearty freshman competed in a higher weight and came away victorious against the more seasoned Panther.
"That's what you want is to have kids who beat you and have them get up and go back and beat them," Coleman said.
At 103, Choctaw's T.J. Reim won two of three matches and wound up with a fall of Harrah's Daniel Monroe.
"He's (Reim) not even a starter," Coleman said. "He stepped in and did a good job for us as a little sophomore."
Four Jackets went 3-0 at Harrah including two-time state champion Kyle Garcia (119), Hunter Davis (heavyweight), Frank Smith (140) and Josh Smith (130). Garcia stuck all of his adversaries, as not one of them was able to make it out of the opening period. Davis also recorded falls in all three of his matches.
Other Jackets getting pins in the most competitive dual of the day against Harrah were the Dickson Brothers, Nick (145) and Marcese (189).
ON THE SLATE
Both Choctaw and Midwest City will compete in the Perry Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Bombers, however, will trek to Ponca City tonight first for a 7 o'clock match with the Wildcats.
The Bombers kicked things off against host Harrah, but the Panthers got out to a commanding 30-8 advantage and cruised to a 50-24 triumph behind falls by Joe Tull (112), Conner Wyatt (119), Goyette, Brandon Weeks (152), Richard Griffin (160) and Matt Hasty (215).
Though Harrah got the best of Midwest City, perhaps the most exciting match of the dual came at heavyweight.
Panther Curtis Hurst shot at Bomber Carlos Freeman from the whistle and zipped out to a 4-0 cushion with a takedown and a pair of near-fall points.
Freeman, who outweighed Hurst 271.6-255, seemed to be caught off-guard by Hurst's initial discharge of energy, but got his wits together to remain alive in the clash with a reverse to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Hurst let loose of his second jolt of energy, getting a shoulder on the mat for three additional near-fall points with 42 seconds left in the first period. The Panther led 10-6 entering the second stanza.
In the second, the weight advantage aided Freeman, who then powered his way to a fall in 3:41 to bring the noise level back to normal inside a cramped Harrah Middle School.
Another strong performance for Midwest City came at 125, where Bomber Chance Wilmoth squared off with Panther Cody Gore.
Starting off the match, Wilmoth was riding Gore all over the mat, digging in his feet.
Gore kept his belly on the floor until Wilmoth finally turned his shoulders for three near-fall points, keeping the Panther on his back for nearly a minute. Wilmoth went into the second period with a 5-0 lead and eventually took the dual with a 10-0 major decision.
In the 145-pound slot, Midwest City's James Ward trailed, but picked up a reverse and three near-fall points to grab an 8-6 lead at the first-period buzzer against Harrah's Zane David.
David bounced back to lead again in the second, but Ward never quit and took a 12-10 advantage with a takedown going into the final period.
With just 21 ticks left in regulation, Ward racked up enough points for a 16-7 major decision.
Del City opened the 2010-11 season at home in a dual with Moore, but the Lions left town with a 54-21 conquest.
Winners for the Eagles included Tray Dorrell (112), Devin Green (125), Jamie Shawver (152) and Josh McNaughton (215).
Del City wrestled at Mustang on Dec. 7 and will partake in the Bristow tournament Friday and Saturday.
