Midwest City police investigate kidnapping claim

By Eastword Staff
The Midwest City Police Department reported at about 1 p.m. on Nov. 17, a female employee of Wal-Mart in Midwest City, 29, told store management that she had been kidnapped and her son was being held hostage at gunpoint in the parking lot of the store.

A 911 dispatcher received a call that a woman who said she had been kidnapped was inside the store. The caller also said the alleged kidnapping victim said her four-year old son was outside in their Ford Taurus and being held at gun point by a black male.

When officers arrived, they found Jevon Hughes, 22, from Del City, sitting inside a white Ford Taurus.

Hughes, who is a paraplegic, was searched for weapons and narcotics were found.

Two small children in the car, both under the age of four, were unharmed and did not appear to be upset. No guns were found in the car, however, a knife and tire iron was recovered.

While interviewing the victim, she stated Hughes came to her house last night, and is a friend of her roommate. Sometime during the early morning hours, the victim said she was in fear for her life and felt she had been kidnapped, along with her children. Apparently, the victim, suspect and children made several stops before coming to the Wal-Mart in Midwest City. During the previous stops, the victim was separated from the suspect but did not notify police.

Once inside the store, the victim told management she had been kidnapped and they in turn notified police.

"This appears to be a very convoluted case " we are still gathering information from the victim and interviewing the suspect," Midwest City Chief of Police Brandon Clabes said. "Right now, the only charges against Mr. Hughes are drug related."
