Bombers sweep Choctaw, lose to Moore

By Tim Farley

The Midwest City High School baseball team has been on a roll lately, winning eight of their last 10 games before the start of today’s Lawton Tournament.

The Bombers started to turn it on last Monday and Tuesday with back-to-back wins over the Choctaw Yellowjackets in Choctaw.

Midwest City starting pitcher Greg Bruno gave the Bombers a seveninning, complete game in the Monday matchup with Choctaw. Bruno gave up one run, two hits with two strikeouts and eight walks.

Bruno also carried Midwest City at the plate in the first game. He went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two of the Bombers’ three runs. Joel Davis, Zach Brannon and Colby Reinheart combined for four hits and all three of the team’s RBI as the Bombers took the first victory of the two-game stand 3-1.

The Bombers turned around on Tuesday and received another stellar pitching performance from hurler Joel Davis. Davis tossed five strong innings and gave up three runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

Midwest City’s bats came alive in the second game, too. Three players combined to push across nine runs on the way to their victory. Davis helped his own cause by going 4-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Bruno went 2-4 with four RBIs and Damian Orr went 2-5 with two RBI.

One week after sweeping Choctaw, the Bombers traveled to Moore to take on the Lions for a two-game set. The Bombers weren’t able to come away with a win in the Monday game and the Tuesday game was rained out.

The Bombers and Lions played a lowscoring game with Moore winning 4-3.

Bruno started the game for Midwest City and pitched 4 2/3 innings with four earned runs on six hits and a walk. Bruno struck out six Moore batters.

The Bombers will try to end their drought at the plate this weekend in Lawton. The team will open up the Lawton Tournament Thursday with a game against Cache at 1:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of Putnam City-Lawton on Friday.

“I love going to Lawton this time in the year,” Vermillion said. “For some teams they like to take time off throughout the week. We like to keep playing. Our philosophy is the more we play, the better we get. Tournaments like these are huge going down the stretch into a playoff run.”
