Millers down Choctaw as Jackets’ slump continues

By Eastword Staff

Choctaw’s Yellowjackets are trying to work their way out of a slump that has seen the team drop six of its last eight games.

So far, the effort hasn’t produced the winning results head coach Mark Craft wants.

After dropping two of three games in its own tournament last week, the Jackets lost two consecutive games to Yukon, which is ranked No. 4 in Class 6A. Choctaw was ranked in the top 20 earlier in the season, but has since dropped from the list.

Yukon run-ruled the Jackets 14-4 on Monday, and then earned a nine-inning 7-5 win on Tuesday.

During their tournament, the Jackets lost to the No. 24 Norman Tigers 7-3 and lost a second game to the homeschool team OKC Bronchos. Choctaw’s only win came against Word of Life, a private school team from Kansas.

“I’m disappointed,” Craft said. “I didn’t feel like we played very well in any of those tournament games, although we did win one. We’ve definitely been inconsistent. We weren’t hitting the ball well until the final day of the tournament, and we didn’t play well the week before that.”

Choctaw’s last win against a Class 6A opponent was March 30 as the Jackets defeated No. 10 Norman North 6-5.

Prior to that game, Choctaw lost two games to Midwest City, 3-1 and 9-3.

Choctaw will play in the Edmond Tournament this week before playing Edmond North in a home-and-home on Monday and Tuesday. Choctaw will travel to Edmond North on Monday, and then host the Huskies on Tuesday. T he Monday game is set for 4 p.m. and Tuesday’s game time is 4:30 p.m.
