Titan boys lose in shootout; girls dominated by Santa Fe

By Tim Farley

Carl Albert’s Titan soccer team took Class 6A’s Edmond Santa Fe to a shootout Tuesday night after ending regulation play tied at 0-0.

The Wolves outscored the Titans in the shootout to notch the 1-0 victory. Carl Albert now stands at 3-1 with wins over Guymon, Chickasha and Mustang and is ranked No. 6 in Class 5A. The Titans defeated district foe Guymon 3-2, downed 6A ‘s Mustang 1-0 and shut out Chickasha 2-0 in games earlier this season.

“I’ve got strong senior and sophomore groups this season,” head coach Jeremy Hymel said. “Taking Edmond Santa Fe to a shootout was very good.

Senior Jeremiah Reed, who led the team in goals scored last season, is expected to be a dominant force again this season. However, Reed will attend college in the

fall on a football scholarship.

The Titans will play in Southmoore’s Big Cat Classic Friday and Saturday. Carl Albert will play Edmond Santa Fe again at 4 p.m. Friday, then take on Moore at 7 p.m. The Titans will close pool play with a 1 p.m. game Saturday against Putnam City.

Lady Titans Meanwhile, the Lady Titans were roughed up Tuesday night as the Edmond Santa Fe Lady Wolves blistered the home team, 7-1.

Now ranked No. 9 in Class 5A, Carl Albert’s record stands at 2-2 with wins over Guymon (9-0) and Chickasha (2-1). The Lady Titans lost to Class 6A’s Mustang. The win over Guymon leaves Carl Albert with a 1-0 district mark heading into the Putnam North tournament Friday and Saturday.

“That was a tough game,” Hymel said, referring to Tuesday’s match against the Lady Wolves. “We’re young and inexperienced, yet we have a lot of seniors and freshmen. There’s also some who don’t play club ball. In the past, I’ve mainly had girls who played year round.”

Carl Albert’s non-district schedule against 6A teams will help prepare the Lady Titans for upcoming district matchups.

“We play quality 6A teams to get better.

We could have played better last night, but we gave up some easy goals,” Hymel said.

Leading the Lady Titan charge will be University of Central Oklahoma signee Ciara Mitchell, who led Class 5A in assists last season. Other team leaders, Hymel said, are forward Makenzie Shelton and sweeper Lindsey Roberts.

With a large contingent of freshmen players, Hymel said this year’s team will “have a larger learning curve. We have a lot of potential, but we will have to be fast learners. At times, we’ll see really good flow, but then there’s a mistake.”
