The fast-approaching bond issue election for the Mid-Del Schools represents an opportunity for "our generation" to build upon the outstanding foundation laid by those who were "us" before we were "us!"
We honor with the ultimate respect those outstanding leaders who built, block-by-block, the tradition of excellence known as Mid-Del. Now, we can embrace the responsibility of magnifying those contributions of the past by using them as a motivation to take the next steps in the development of our school district. Normally, bond issues serve to "paint, patch, pretty up'' without raising taxes. This bond issue has far more wide-reaching purposes: to cut non-educational operating expenses so that we can protect as many jobs as possible and to create state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments that Mid-Del's students and teachers deserve, but with the same condition " no tax increase.
Because public school districts have no control over their operational revenue, they must focus financial strategies on controlling expenses. To match income shortfalls, we must make similar significant reductions in expenses while, at the same time, maintaining our commitment to the journey of continuous improvement for the Mid-Del Public Schools.
The newest school in Mid-Del is 33 years old, higher than the average age of schools in Edmond and Moore. In addition, we are operating virtually the same number of school facilities as we did several years ago with nearly 6,000 more students.
Passage of the Mid-Del bond issue to be presented for consideration on Dec. 14 will permit the District to move from 26 schools to 20 schools by 2013. Four of those 20 schools would be brand new, and five would have significant remodeling and renovations. The average age of our elementary schools would be 36, as compared to 56, if we do nothing.
While space and time limits limit detail about specific projects associated with this bond issue, a complete review of the proposal is available on the school district's website: mid-del.net.
A community is known for the schools it keeps! If not now, when? If not us, who? Thank you for your continued support! It keeps our community strong!
