Coffee, smoothies go Underground

By Stefanie Brickman
Let's get it out there in the open.

I love coffee. I love variations of coffee " French roast, Colombian, Arabica, Brazilian and just straight-up generic in the black-and-white can. I love it hot. I love it frozen. I love it in ice cream. I love it in frozen yogurt. I love it with cream. I love it with milk, out of the bottle or steamed. I love it with sugar. I love it with Splenda. I love it with flavored syrup. I love it in the morning. I love it in the middle of the afternoon. I love it with dessert.

Now that we've established that fact, I can talk about my experience at The Underground, 1621 S. Douglas Blvd.

You'd think I would talk about the delightful coffee I had, right? Nope. I ordered a strawberry smoothie. Yes, totally did. And it was wonderful!

Why the smoothie? Because I had tried a cappuccino on a previous visit. Had I reviewed my experience from that visit, it would have been full of exclamation points. Now I can be more well-rounded and talk about the other delightful menu items.

The Underground serves a selection of fresh fruit smoothies made without added sugar and with fresh fruit and juice. My medium order cost $3.95 and was chock-full of flavor and antioxidants. It was a very close decision between banana or strawberry. The selection of coffee drinks and non-coffee drinks is extensive, and most can be served hot or blended frozen.

PICK-UP WINDOW
The store is in a shopping center just south of the SE 15th and Douglas Blvd. intersection. It is the southernmost location so that drivers can use the pick-up window. Those drivers, though, would miss out on the funky, groovy ambiance inside the coffeehouse/eatery/Internet caf/music venue.

There are comfortable couches and pub-height tables with leather stools, as well as conventional tables and chairs. There is a medium-height bar in the front, and a higher bar near where the coffee is prepared.

The Underground is hustle and bustle but without seeming so. The staff is able to juggle the window and the walk-in traffic while also catering to the clientele scattered throughout the conversation areas.

On the afternoon of my strawberry smoothie, I weighed my options of the baked treats presented nearby the menu. There were pastries from Oklahoma City's Brown's Bakery, along with prepackaged chocolate-covered espresso beans. I first had those in my hand before I dared to eat a Vegan Explosive Espresso Chocolate Chip cookie, prepackaged and manufactured by California's Alternative Bakery Company. The cookie was incredibly moist, despite being packaged, and the espresso beans were like tiny pieces of paradise. (That coffee lover thing strikes again.)

The Underground serves bagels and sandwiches in addition to pastries and sweet things. With the free Wi-fi, many business meetings were being conducted onsite.

The Underground is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays.
