The Carl Albert Titans performed well at the annual Chickasha Tournament.
The team won 10 matches overall and many wrestlers had some great showings.
Logan Shelton stood out for the squad placing fifth in the 106 weight class.
At 120 pounds, Michael Moody pinned three of his five opponents. Each one pinned in under five minutes.
First, Moody claimed a fall in 53 seconds over a member of the Southmoore wrestling team, Cody Cockrum.
Next he took out Eddie Gonzales from Santa Fe South after reversing him in the second period and Edwin Dominguez of South East in 4:42.
Moody also beat one of Chickasha’s own, Lamar Neff in a close battle that ended with Neff down by 2. The only loss was to Tanner Leonard from Elgin falling on 42 seconds.
Chris Fairbairn (132) had two victories on the tournament.
The first came over Reece Maitein of Elgin ending in a close score of 4-2. The next was another over Cody Gill from Southmoore where Fairbairn was down by 2 and then claimed a fall in the few remaining seconds of the third period.
Though he wrestled hard, Fairbairn fell short against Alex Cardenas from Piedmont and Malik Slater from MacArthur.
Shelton (106) beat Yoshi Orikasas from Norman after scoring 5 points then claiming a fall at 1:37.
He also pinned Joel Altemeier of Tuttle in 57 seconds. Steven Minton from Southmoore fell in 52 seconds. Shelton shifted his focus to Chance King from Deer Creek taking the 9-0 to earn fifth place over all.
Before taking on King, Shelton battled Gio Martinez from Southmoore where the two ended the third period tied at four but Martinez was the first to score in overtime.
Nikko Bernard (138) claimed a fall from Paul Kester of Lawton Eisenhower with two seconds left in the second period. Bernard also beat Nick Sales of Chickasha 6-0 after earning a takedown just before the end of the third period.
After a long weekend of hard work, Dayton Garret from Tuttle claimed a fall over Bernard, and Dominic Neff of Chickasha beat Bernard after earning an escape toward the end of the third period.
It proved to be a weekend of learning experiences for Carl Albert’s freshmen.
Chad Smith (138) pinned Dylan Wynne of Westmoore in 1:03 after earning 2 points by near fall but lost to Tyler Mahan of Guthrie and William Foster of Westmoore.
Remington Haggard (145) fought hard but came up short in 42 seconds by Lane Turner of Tuttle’s hand. Haggard lost 10-0 against Nick Popp from Norman, but then beat Juan Meave of Blanchard by a single point that he gained towards the end of the third period in dramatic fashion.
The Titans have continued to improve as the season has moved along by growing stronger as both individuals and as a team.
CAHS fell victim to inclement weather which cancelled the Suburban Conference Championship.
As a result, Carl Albert will shift its focus on qualifing for the junior high state tournament coming up Feb. 7 and high school state on Feb. 28.
