The Titans returned to Weatherford last Tuesday where they started off the new year right as they took down Weatherford 38-30.
The team had traveled to Weatherford before the holiday break and Carl Albert Head Coach Curt Hodges remembers the first trip quite well.
“[We] wrestled better and showed more improvement,” said Hodges. “Effort was really good and we are starting to see the rewards of working hard in practice” said Coach Curt Hodges.
Unfortunately due to weather, Carl Albert was never able return to finish that tournament.
However, this time around Carl Albert did more than just improve as a team. Garrett Chappell, at 132 pounds, scored first when he pinned opponent Nate Davis in the first round at the 1:26 mark.
Next, Chris Fairbarien won with a major decision after defeating Cole Sanchez. R. T. Sherman continued the momentum by pinning his opponent Alex Dilgalgo in 3:47 into the first round.
Austin Grantham scored the deciding victory on the night. Grantham used a takedown with 44 seconds left in the match to take a 1-point advantage over his opponent Danny Caldwell.
Grantham continued to hold his opponent down in order to prevent him from scoring. Grantham won 4-3, and sealed the victory up for Carl Albert.
After their victory, the Titans returned home to face Piedmont last Thursday, but unfortunately didn’t carry the momentum from their last victory into the match. Carl Albert came out strong with Logan Shelton pinning Hunter Clemons in 5:08 after scoring several near fall points.
This was the only victory for the Titans for several matches until RT Sherman beat Jacob Tyler scoring his team 3 points.
Braxton Black won the next match with a pin in 3:54. Even with 2 pins, the Titans fell to Piedmont 18-51.
Although their second match did not prove as eventful as the first, the coaching staff is really happy for the guys to get their first duel win.
“It was the type of win we had to earn and we did it with strong performances,” said Hodges.
