The suspect, identified as Kyle Alexander Smith, was arrested the same day in Chickasha in connection with the deaths of David Garrick, 60, and his wife Rose, 57. The couple and their grandson lived at 3416 Pleasant Drive.
Smith was arrested on complaints of murder, arson and desecration of human bodies. Smith and two other suspects in the case allegedly set the house on fire in an attempt to burn the bodies and destroy evidence of the killings, police said. Smith remains in the Oklahoma County jail without bond. Police were able to track Smith to Chickasha after conducting a ping test on his cell phone, according to the affidavit.
Witnesses told police Smith reportedly wanted to create “a memory of the murder” so he videotaped it.
Jonathan Siders told investigators Smith showed him the video on his cell phone after telling him he had killed his grandparents. Siders also told detectives the video showed a dead body on the floor with massive head injuries. One portion of the video reportedly shows the end of a machete poking at the eyes of Rose Garrick, investigators wrote in the affidavit.
Two other teens, Dustin August Martin, 18, and Jacob Isaiah Leblanc, 17, were arrested on complaints of accessory to murder after the fact, arson and desecration of human bodies. The teens were booked into jail early March 24 after investigators learned they had allegedly helped Smith set fire to the Garrick’s home.
Prior to setting the fire, the three suspects smoked marijuana in the living room and talked about ways to dispose of the bodies, the affidavit states. The two victims and a pet dog found in the bathroom all suffered severe trauma to the head, Clabes said.
Midwest City Detective Wade Ramsey wrote in an affidavit that large pools of blood were around both victims as well as blood spatter and smears in several places around the house. Ramsey also wrote that David Garrick had lacerations to his right hand, a sign that he attempted to defend himself.
