Water Rationing

Most Eastern Oklahoma County residents shouldn’t be rationing water this summer thanks to a plentiful supply provided by Lake Thunderbird and significant water well systems, city officials in Midwest City, Del City and Choctaw have said.

Midwest City Manager Guy Henson said residents here would “only see a disruption if service from Thunderbird occurred.” Midwest City also benefits from a 24-well system that collects its water from the Garber-Wellington Aquifer.

Tim's Column NEW

As the old Midwest City Bomber water tower was brought down last week, people stopped to watch the dismantling and then shared memories of yesteryear when the tower served as a locator beacon.

For many people, the tower was a landmark that gave them an indication of where they were going. For others, the memories involved trying to scale the tower even when they knew, if caught, the consequences would be severe.

Last year, some Midwest City High School alumni held a party at the Charles Johnson Central Park following the announcement that the tower would soon be nothing more than a memory. Hundreds of people showed up, Mike Black and the Stingrays performed and KWTV-9 anchor Stan Miller (a MWC grad) was there to emcee the event.

Jack Clearwater's Column

Is LIBOR biggest scandal to date or is it the media?

As a “concerned citizen” in Eastern Oklahoma County, I feel a sense of duty to right a wrong, correct a mistake or simply tell the other side of the story when appropriate to do so.  First, I like what you’ve done with the paper.  It’s got a lot of spice.  I like spice, like the spice you get at the Tom Yum Thai restaurant on SE 29th Street in Del City.  The paper clears your mental sinuses so you can get a good picture of what’s going on in Eastern Oklahoma County.

Cool Zones

OG&E Energy Corporation has partnered with local businesses to create “cool zones” for residents.

These are places citizens can go to escape the heat of the summer. Libraries, churches and senior citizen centers are places that provide air conditioning and cold bottled water to those that may not have access to them.

There are 12 cool zones in the Eastern Oklahoma County area.

Choctaw's new city manager gets pay increase from Texas

When Roger Nelson moves to Choctaw next month, he will have a whole lot more money in his pocket.

The newly hired Choctaw city manager will earn approximately $22,000 more than he did in Clyde, Texas, where he worked as city manager since September 2009. His last day on that job was July 20.

Earlier this month, Choctaw councilmembers unanimously approved Nelson’s hiring to replace Robert Floyd, who they fired earlier this year.

Two major utility line breaks forced the evacuation of a Midwest City medical building July 12, even as doctors were operating on patients, a fire department spokesman said.

Two patients who were in surgery immediately were moved to a recovery room where doctors finished the procedures as the building was being evacuated. Later, the patients were transported to Midwest Regional Hospital, fire department spokesman David Richardson said.

Long overdue City dedicates new DC police station in honor of fallen officer

Del City celebrated a milestone last week when law enforcement officials and the community came together to dedicate the city’s new police station.

The blazing Oklahoma sun didn’t affect the pomp of the 1 p.m. ceremony led by Mayor Brian Linley, and attended by numerous other state and local dignitaries anxious to show support.

Before touring the 18,000-square foot building, the estimated 400 attendees paid tribute to Del City’s only fallen police officer, William Haskell Keith, who died at age 26 following a 1965 high speed pursuit. The building is named in his honor.

DC council shuts down private prison

History repeated itself in Del City Monday.

Just like planning and zoning commissioners did last month, councilmembers shut down a rezoning request to turn a church located in a residential neighborhood into a private correctional facility.

One-by-one the city’s four councilmembers voted to deny the application request made by partners Howard Memorial Baptist Church and Center Point, Inc. which operates 17 correctional programs in four states.
