Construction of a memorial in Midwest City to honor men and women veterans has been delayed due to inclement weather, committee members say.
The June 14 dedication has now been pushed back to July 12. The ceremony will still begin at 10 a.m. and be held at the memorial being built inside Joe B. Barnes Regional Park. Once complete, the memorial will be located just south of the corner of Douglas and Reno Ave. near the city pool.
Attendees are asked to RSVP by June 28 by emailing [email protected].
The memorial has been long-awaited by residents.
Leading the cause as project co-chair is Hiawatha Bouldin, a retiree from the U.S. Air Force, who calls the memorial "A True Place of Honor."
He was approached by longtime resident Andy Cornelius to place an American flag somewhere in the city’s park and the project quickly grew from there.
After almost four years of fundraising later, the memorial was able to come to fruition after a final donation from the Midwest City Hospital Authority when the memorial received $60,000 of the $300,000 awarded in grants to various local groups and organizations this year. Previously, the Authority gave $100,000 to the memorial and the rest of the funds have come from various donors and fundraising efforts.
The memorial committee broke ground on the project March 1.
