School is back in session. Please drive safe and be on the look out for children and school buses.

Gen. Bruce Litchfield doesn't consider the state of our nation's economy and how it impacts the military as completely disparaging. In fact, he sees the challenges he faces as an opportunity for Tinker Air Force Base to be poised as a leader, prepped and ready for the next mission whatever that may be. On Aug. 22, Litchfield addressed those attending the...

State test results hanging in balance

Mid-Del school leaders are anxiously awaiting information they say could have a big impact on the school district.

On Tuesday, the Oklahoma State Department of Education announced the results of a study looking into the disruption some students had while taking their state tests last year.

The independent study by HumRRO found that students did as well on the tests as students not involved in the disruption.

Based on this finding, State Supt. Janet Barresi has decided to retain all scores of impacted students who scored proficient or advanced, a press release stated.

Then, students with unsatisfactory scores will not be reported.

Rose aiming to shape another Titan of a champion
The Carl Albert Titans’ drive to the Class 5A state title in 2012 may turn out to be one for the ages. After all, the squad sputtered out of the gate, winning only one of its first six games.

And although the memory of the championship is still fresh on the minds of many, it is not at the forefront of the mind of Gary Rose, the team’s head football coach.

“Well, last year’s first six games were a disaster,” he said. “But we kept getting better. Then, we got healthy. We won eight in a row to win the state championship.”

For Rose, things appear to be that straightforward. He, along with the rest of Carl Albert program have their sights set squarely on a return to the top.

Tinker and the Primes event continues to build reputation

The ninth installment of Tinker and the Primes was held in Midwest City Aug. 5-7 with 500 participants at the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at the Reed Conference Center.

This year’s event, just like always, focused on bringing together companies wishing to do business with military leaders and units affiliated with Tinker Air Force Base and the Air Force Sustainment Center. The three-day affair attracts hundreds of aerospace, defense and government contracting businesses and organizations from across North America.

Director Dave Burnett heads up production of the event, which is produced by the Defense Industry Alliance, Inc., a subsidiary of the Midwest City Chamber of Commerce.

The 2013 attendance figure was down from previous years, but Burnett said participants indicated the event may have been the best year yet for Tinker and the Primes.

Wickline celebrates music director's 30 year anniversary

Ralph Duncan came to Wickline United Methodist Church on the first Sunday in July 1983.

Since that time, he has been at Wickline leading the choir, heading the music program, arranging and providing special music for 30 years.

Of course, when he auditioned for the position and when he became the director of music, he had no idea that 30 years later, he would still be using his gifts in that position.

Duncan said however, it is a blessing to still be working with the Wickline choir.

He has always been interested in the performing arts — or at least since his early school years.  He believes that he has been blessed to have many of the instructors and mentors he has studied under and with.

One characteristic that many of them shared in addition to their musical knowledge was enthusiasm.  They were eager to encourage others in their love of music.

Duncan said he has followed that example in all of his endeavors.
