Letitia and Larry Pierce are turning black thumbs green with their innovative Garden Anywhere Boxes.
Local and accidental inventor Larry Pierce started tinkering one day and never stopped. The results are a patent-pending custom filtration watering system that requires almost no maintenance, wastes no water, and saves gardeners money and time.
As it is prolifically stated, necessity is the mother of invention.
Some of the original gardening box systems were not up to the standard the Pierces needed ,so he got started improving them.
“We started seven or eight years ago gardening this way,” Pierce said. “We started with a product called Earthbox. It’s similar in design but they still have to be watered individually. We had some success with them and my wife wanted to get some more. I found on the internet how to make your own but there were some design flaws. I’d build one garden with it, and then see the flaws, so I would improve it. Finally I got a design that worked perfectly.”
There was now the need to water ten or 20 boxes a day by hand, when in a garden you could just turn the sprinklers on. With the boxes it could take hours to fill each box and there was still a ton of wasted water. Letitia asked her husband to see if he could find a way to make it easier and the Garden Anywhere box system was born.
“We had over 20 boxes on our back deck and my wife was watering them by hand each day. During this time of year it takes two or three minutes to fill up these boxes, and out in the heat for hours that’s crazy,” Pierce said. “So we tried two or three watering systems. Nothing worked that didn’t waste a lot of water. Finally, I came up with the design I have now. I connected all the boxes together, but I’m not a plumber, so I didn’t know what was out there so I was just going to the plumbing aisle going ‘that might work, ‘trying different things until I came up with a design that really works well.”
This new system conserved around 70 percent of the water used with previous watering strategies. Now this system is so intuitive that a three-box system can be set up in under an hour, and theoretically (provided adequate water supply and level ground), the system could employ in excess of 100 boxes.
The real beauty of these boxes is that they are completely portable. Truly, you can garden anywhere there is light and level ground. In apartment complexes, indoors or out, even planting in the winter and keeping the boxes inside until it warms up.
The boxes are custom-built plastic containers filled with potting mix (soil is a four letter word with this family), dolomite crystals and a strip of fertilizer, all covered with a black plastic tarp to keep moisture in and weeds out. Other than the potting mix and plants, all of this is available as a single-box system for $55 or, the most popular purchase, a three-box starter kit with the patent-pending Automatic Watering System and enough dolomite and fertilizer for all three boxes, for $199.
You can order Garden Anywhere boxes and the watering system online at www.gardenanywherebox.com but the Pierces prefer phone orders at 405-818-2599. However, they could easily develop a backlog, as they build every box and watering system by hand and in their house.
They order all the parts needed from local stores, other than the Tupperware containers which are bought in bulk through Lowes. Most parts are ordered from the Dee-Kens
Community Hardware store in Choctaw.
