Stillwater stampedes Bombers
by Bailey Powell

Midwest City took on the Stillwater Pioneers last Thursday in a one sided battle that leaned heavily Stillwater’s way.

The Bombers wrestled a hard dual, but they were unable to score a victory in any matches making the final score 65-0.

MCHS started out great in their first match with Bomber Taylor Holman (113) leading Pioneer Tyler Derringer 4-2 after the first period.

Holman made a valiant effort to hold onto the lead the rest of the match, but in the end he just ran out of steam. Derringer took the match 9-6.

Next, Midwest City’s Marquez Edwards (120) took on Jacob Fontanez. The Pioneer wrestler moved with agility around the mat before using his strength to pin Edwards in 5:56.

After the pin, the team score stood 9-0 in favor of Stillwater.

The 126-pound match was the first of three forfeits for the Bombers who would also forfeit at 138 and 160 pounds.

Stillwater’s Kaid Brock (130) not only wrestled aggressively but intelligently as well to get the pin over Midwest City’s R.J. Walker in 1:56.

At 152 pounds Evan Wilson took on Joe Smith. Wilson scored five escapes during the round, but it wasn’t enough. Smith out muscled Wilson scoring several two-point takedowns and winning the match 20-5. The decision brought the team score to 31-0.

The Pioneers weren’t done pinning the Bombers for the night when the 170-pound Chandler Rogers pinned Bomber Dante Sezer in 1:30.

Next on the mat 195 pounders Bomber Patrick Clayson battled Pioneer Jordan Deninger. The dual ended quickly as Deninger pinned Clayson in 1:56.

Ryan Tilbury was next for the Bombers at 220 pounds. He forced opponent Cantrell Carden into double overtime after a hard fought tie in the regular periods. Neither opponent could score in the first overtime, which consisted of an extra minute of wrestling time. The next overtime was a little different.

Each opponent would get the chance to go down first; giving that opponent the greater chance to score. The second overtime also would consist of two 30-second periods so that each opponent had an equal chance of scoring.

Carden chose to go down first. Tilbury held on with all of his might for as long as he could before Carden edged out of his grasp with milliseconds on the clock. This gave Carden an escape point and a one-point lead as Tilbury took his turn.

Tilbury pulled and fought to escape Carden’s grasp but nearly eight minutes of wrestling had taken its toll on the young athlete. In the end he was unable to free himself of Carden, losing the match 8-7. The score now stood at 62-0.

The heavyweights and lightweights were both much of the same story. Stillwater’s heavyweight James Brower defeated Markeylo Edwards 5-0 and lightweight Andrew Niemen defeated Midwest City’s Drew Wilson 3-1.

Although the final score was 65-0, Midwest City Head Coach Cory Wilson was not down about his team’s performance.

“Stillwater’s a powerhouse this year. They’ve got a lot of talent on their team and we’ve got talent too, but at this moment in the season, were not to their level.”
He did find some positives in the match.

“We wrestled well. Our 220 pounder [Tilbury] was another positive and our 106 pounder [Wilson] did really well against Neiman,” said Wilson.

Next the Bombers take on Edmond Memorial Thursday Jan 30. at Midwest City High School.
