Last Saturday, local middle and high schools were on the Oklahoma City University campus for the Oklahoma State Dance Team Directors’ Association state pom competition.
First Carl Albert Middle School and Harrah Junior High took the floor.
CAMS placed first in pom, jazz and hip-hop. Although the Lady Titans have placed second in two events before, this was the first time ever they swept all of their events. They won with creative chorography and absolutely perfect timing on all of their performances.
Coach Barbra Kelso said, “I couldn’t be prouder.” She attributed the team’s success to coaching staff and chorographers Becca Newman and Penny Caps.
Ally Stephens of Carl Albert placed third in the solo competition with a colorful performance that highlighted her flexibility.
Harrah Junior High competed in the mixed event and after a few technical problems with their music, they showed off their moves in an interesting performance.
After lunch it was time for the big girls to strut their stuff. Carl Albert, Choctaw, Harrah and Del City each had strong performances.
Carl Albert High School placed first in jazz and hip-hop and third in pom. The Lady Titans won jazz with incredible flexibility and a performance that remained perfectly in-sync throughout. Their money-themed hip-hop performance was fun to watch and very fast paced.
Choctaw High School placed third with a mixed dance performance highlighted with high kicks and jumps, and they moved through the performance.
Coach Jacklyn Harrison said, “My girls worked extremely hard and put everything they had out on that floor! 6A is a hard division and third place is absolutely amazing!”
The Jackets will now prepare for nationals on Jan. 25 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
Harrah High School placed second in 5A mix and third in 5A hip-hop in their sailor themed mix performance. The team did well with spacing and transitions between the movements. The Lady Panthers continued the sea theme with a pirate themed hip-hop performance. They worked well as a team and stayed together through a very fast-paced performance.
Del City had a good showing in 5A hip-hip with an interesting Lady Gaga themed performance. The girls showed their collective skill level with several moves that required the team members to work together.
