A Midwest City teenager convicted of first-degree murder was sentenced to life in prison last week by Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy Truong.
Dewayne Edward Kemp, 17, was convicted last month in the death of Marquis Lee Patterson.
On Oct. 21, 2010, both Kemp and Patterson were shot by Amanda Walworth when they tried to break into her home.
Patterson died as a result of his wounds, and Kemp was charged with his death. Under Oklahoma’s felony murder law, a person committing a felony can be charged with first-degree murder if an accomplice dies during the crime.
Kemp’s attorney David Bedford called the ruling unfit for the crime. He said he intends to appeal the conviction and file a motion asking for a new trial.
Kemp also was ordered to pay more than $2,733 in restitution for damage to the house.
Co-defendant DeAungelo Quain Johnson, 18, also faces complaints of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in the case. His case is pending. Johnson is accused of helping plan the home invasion and serving as lookout.
