EastWord News is proud to welcome a member to our team. Here is a personal message from Joel Dean to tell a little more about himself.
“I am a recent graduate from Oklahoma Christian University. I was the news section editor for my college paper, The Talon, for three years. I began as a writer my freshman year and was quickly promoted to news editor. I am a news focused, investigative reporter. I enjoy the type of breaking news that deeply impacts the public or has the chance to be a divisive topic.
I graduated early with a print journalism degree and a minor in English and international relations. I’ve studied abroad in both Wales and southern Europe (stationed in Vienna, Austria). I traveled extensively in Italy, Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic. I was born and raised in Lawton/Fort Sill in a military family with five children. I am one of the middle children with two older brothers, a slightly older sister and one younger brother.
I’m actively pursuing creative publications. I published a few short stories in my school’s literary journal, Soundings. I presented one of these pieces at the annual Sigma Tau Delta conference in Portland, Oreg. I hope someday, on top of writing for a major magazine or newspaper publication, to publish a novel. I have been working on a few ideas with a writing professor for the last few semesters.
I have always had a passion for writing and for getting the latest information. I fell in love with the Oklahoma City suburb area throughout my college career. I am extremely exited to be able to start a full-time job within my chosen field mere weeks after graduation. I believe I will be a great fit for this paper and this area. I look forward to becoming an active member of this community.”
