Literacy Link recently accepted a $9,500 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. Presenting the check to Literacy Link representatives Bill Veazey, board member, and Nancy Edwards, board president, was State Rep. Gary Banz, R-Midwest City.
According to the Oklahoma State Assessment of Adult Literacy, 12 percent of Oklahomans over age 16 read below basic level, with another 31 percent of adults having only basic reading skills. The Literacy Link is a volunteer-based program that provides free literacy instruction to adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills. Learners work one-on-one with a trained tutor using a variety of teaching methods and materials.
Grant funds will be used to support adult literacy in Eastern Oklahoma County. For more information about the program or to volunteer, contact John Amicon at (405) 732-2737.
