Midwest City will join the nation in honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 17th annual Prayer Breakfast set for Monday, Jan. 20.
Staged at the Midwest City Sheraton Hotel at the Reed Conference Center, the breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. This year’s theme is “Service EmPowers,” keeping with Dr. King’s legacy, organizers say.
Keynote speakers will include David Slane, an Oklahoma City criminal defense attorney, and the Reverend Semaj Vanzant, Sr., pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.
Slane is known for his work in the high-profile case involving Robin Howard, who died in June 2012 while in Oklahoma City Police custody. Howard’s family found out about his death four days later. Slane represented the family in their fight to find out what happened.
Rev. Vanzant has been the leader of Christ Church since Dec. 2011. The church is located at 1006 NE 17th Street.
In usual fashion, the breakfast will feature a variety of entertainment including the Del City High School String Quartet, Jahruba, master drummer and storyteller, along with Bonita Franklin, soloist and acting chairperson of the Langston University music department.
Doors will open at 7 a.m. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Nick Harroz Community Center, 200 N. Midwest Blvd. or at Prosperity Real Estate office, by calling (405) 623-1957. T-shirts also will be available for $10 at the event.
