The Del City Chamber of Commerce announces the addition of three new AWACS plane static displays.
A ribbon cutting dedication was scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 at the site of the three new displays located on Sooner Road, just south of SE 29th Street (across from the Sooner Road gate into Tinker Air Force Base). The event was cancelled Monday due to the weather, but will be rescheduled for a later date, the chamber said.
Del City Chamber Executive Director Kay Bibens said including the three plane displays being dedicated, this will make the new total of displays six.
One of the displays was financially supported by and is being dedicated in honor of Ken Bartlett, and his late wife, Joanne Bartlett.
The remaining displays will honor the memory of World War II veterans, and Air Force Staff Sergeant Daniel N. Fannin, who was killed in a plane crash April 27 while deployed in Afghanistan.
Fannin was one of four men killed in the crash, the cause of which is still unknown. Fannin was assigned to the 552nd Operations support Squadron out of Tinker Air Force Base and the 361st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron.
The display in Fannin’s honor was funded by the Del City and Midwest City Rotary Clubs.
As for the WWII display, it is in honor of the following: Billy J. Bryant, Henry R. Inman, Johnnie B. Lassiter, Gus A. Coleman, Charles L. Clark, James E. Nolen and Irwin A. Stover. The families of each of the veterans funded this display, including: Rep. Scott Inman, John D. Lassiter, Steve and Lori Coleman and James H. and Jimmie Nolen.
The group behind the project plans to have 10 displays in all, so in 2014, Bibens said she hopes there is support to complete the project.
