Mary Mathilda (Moreland) Sledge of Choctaw, ended her earthly journey with God Sunday morning, Nov. 17, 2013. Born November 7, 1934, Mary had just celebrated her 79th birthday.
Mary grew up in Shirley Center, MA with her parents, Walter and Annie Moreland, and her brother, Walt. She married her husband of 59 years, Thomas Walker Sledge, on July 3, 1954. As a US Air Force wife, she moved with her husband and children, Elizabeth and Dale, to several states as well as Guam and the Philippines. She was an LPN and was able to practice nursing in several states over the years. The family moved to Tinker AFB in 1969 and made Oklahoma their home.
Mary loved painting, gardening, working with the horses and traveling with Tom in their RV – especially to Port Aransas. She has been active in her church with women’s group, choir, and altar guild. Family was her greatest joy; from being actively involved with her own children in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to spending time with her grandchildren and great granddaughter. Mary was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. She had a smile on her face for everyone.
A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 25 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street, OKC, with reception following. Committal was at a later date.
Mary was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease in 1982 and bravely faced a multitude of challenges associated with this rare auto-immune disease. Her family would like to thank the many health-care professionals who gently cared for Mary over the years. In honor of Mary, the family is requesting in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation, www.nadf.us.
Services were under the direction of Barnes and Friederich Funeral Home.
