After all, we received numerous compliments about our publication and its new appearance, content and local ownership. In this business, compliments can be few and far between, so we enjoyed all of the positive remarks.

552nd Air Wing honored for 35th anniversary

Headline news was part of the Del City Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet and Hall of Fame induction ceremony Feb. 2.

Banquet organizers developed a broadcast and press conference theme for the event with Rose State’s Stan Greil and Del City librarian Tera McAmis serving as news anchors. At one point, new chamber President Connie Myrick held a “press conference” to describe the group’s accomplishments in 2011 and detail plans for 2012.

Poking fun at politicians, Myrick said, “Ladies and gentlemen, I will not be taking any questions following this press conference.”

On a more serious note, Myrick said chamber officials intend to focus their attention on the growth of local businesses, community leadership development and educational opportunities for members and continued support of the U.S. military.

“As we embark upon all of these events, we need a committed group of volunteers. We need each of you in this room to get involved, take a leadership role in different programs and continue your financial support of the chamber. It takes a lot of volunteer hours to make things happen. We encourage you to get involved, volunteer for a program that fits you and help make this the best chamber in the best city in the metro area.

Myrick also complimented city officials for their plan to demolish apartment complexes along Scott Street and Interstate-40.

“Thanks to our city officials, unsightly blemishes in our city are being torn down to make room for upscale commercial development,” she said.

Awards

As part of the banquet, several awards were passed out, and the chamber honored the 552nd Air Control Wing at Tinker Air Force Base for 35 years of operation. In addition, Gov. Mary Fallin declared March 2012 as “552nd Air Control Wing Month” in Oklahoma.

Among the individuals honored were Payden Donaldson, the recipient of the DelQuest Leadership Student, and Allen Coffin, who was named Del City’s Employee of the Year. Coffin is supervisor of the water treatment plant.

Myrick was presented with a Presidential Service Award for her many years of work with the DelQuest leadership program. In addition, former chamber president Brian Renz received a Presidential Service Award for outstanding service in 2011.

Engineering firm JGVE, Inc., was honored as Business of the Year for its contributions to several city projects.

Longtime Del City resident and Mid-Del Board of Education member Melissa Elzo was presented with the Del City Eagle Loyalty Award for more than 30 years of dedicated service to the community, and Steve Coleman was given the Community Service Award for his work with Oklahoma Honor Flights. Oklahoma Honor Flights provides chartered airplane flights for World War II veterans so they can view the memorials and monuments erected in their honor.

The chamber also recognized Scott Warfel for his community service, and honored MTM Recognition for their 40 years of operation in Del City.

The late Gene Piper was inducted into the Del City Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. His wife, Jackie, accepted the award and thanked chamber officials for the honor. In addition, outgoing chamber President Sheila Thee was recognized for her contributions to the organization during 2011.
