More than $10 million in improvements will be made in Del City if voters approve an extension to a one-and-a-half cent sales tax.
The sales tax election, scheduled for August, has been held every five years since 1997. In each election, voters overwhelmingly approved the measure for specific projects, including the new police station and the newly-renovated community center.
This time, specific projects would include a new fire station, a new library, a new John Smith Sports Complex, a new public works administration building, street work, new police vehicles, replacement of public works vehicles and a renovated senior citizens center.
The fire station has an estimated cost of $3 million while the library would cost about $1.5 million. The sports complex would be about $1 million, and the public works administration building would cost between $500,000 and $600,000.
Meanwhile, the current library would be renovated as the senior citizens center at a cost of $200,000 to $300,000.
City Manager Mark Edwards said major street work would cost an estimated $2 million and new police cars would be about $1 million to $1.2 million. Replacement of public works vehicles would cost $ 1 million.
All of the projects would have to be completed within five years, Edwards said.
Edwards, Mayor Brian Linley and members of the city council made the project announcements during the Del City Chamber of Commerce banquet and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Feb. 2.
