EDMOND - A close game eventually turned into a blowout by halftime as the Edmond Memorial Lady Bulldogs swept past the Del City Lady Eagles, 72-47, Friday night. Edmond Memorial, 13-5, is ranked No. 4 in Class 6A and Del City, 13-6, is the No. 5 team in Class 5A.
The Lady Eagles were the first to score and kept the lead through much of the first quarter and were up 9-6 with 2:36 remaining. But that was the last time Del City would be on the up side of the score as the Lady Bulldogs reeled off seven unanswered points in the final two minutes of the period to take a 13-9 lead at the break.
Edmond came out in the second quarter and put on a long range shooting exhibition, hitting four three-pointers during a 12-5 run to open up the game at 25-13. The two teams played even the rest of the quarter and Memorial went to the locker room with a 12-point lead at 34-22.
In the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs opened up with six unanswered points to build their lead to 18, 40-22, but the Lady Eagles rallied for a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 42-28, and the teams played even the rest of the period with Edmond holding a 50-35 advantage going into the final frame.
Del City opened the frame with a threepointer by Piper Kaltoff to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 50-38, but any hopes of a Lady Eagle comeback were short lived as Edmond went on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 64-41 lead on their way to the final 72-47 win.
Kaltoff led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 14 points followed by Toni Smith with 14 and Mykael Williams with 10. Others scoring for the Lady Eagles were Mariah Jackson with eight and Makayla Beasley with two. Alaisha Castleberry and Adrienne Sheets contributed one point each.
The Lady Bulldogs had four players in double figures led by Sommer Peterson and Alie Decker with 15 each, and Alyssa Hand and Jenny Roy scoring 12 apiece. Other scorers included Sydney Hill with nine, Andee Decker with six and Kaleigh Troxell with three.
For the game Edmond hit 25 field goals with 10 of them coming from outside the three point line. They also connected on 12 of 14 from the free throw line.
The Lady Eagles had 17 field goals, four from three-point range. The Lady Eagles also hit nine of 23 free throws.
Del City returns to the hardwood Friday at Norman North. The team will host Midwest City Tuesday before closing the regular season at home against Moore. Regional tourney action begins Feb. 23.
