Lady Bombers rout Westmoore, 70-25

The No. 2-ranked Midwest City Lady Bombers used a stifling defense to create numerous scoring chances and overwhelmed the Westmoore Lady Jaguars 70-25 Friday night at Sutton Fieldhouse.

The Lady Bombers led wire to wire starting off the game with a 9-2 run. By the end of the first quarter Midwest City led by 10 points, 15-5. Jasauen Beard was the dominating factor in the scoring, netting 11 of Midwest City’s 15 points.

“We came with good intensity,” said Lady Bomber head coach Art Bode. “We did a real good job of attacking the basket in the first quarter and the entire first half, really, which is what we are going to have to do. We didn’t settle for outside shots. We hit a couple of outside shots when necessary, but we never really eased up. We didn’t become complacent. And that is huge for us because we have had a tendency to become complacent and settle for jump shots and things like that. I thought we did a much better job of keeping the hammer down.”

In the second quarter, the Lady Bombers really lowered the boom, going on an 18-1 run to go up 33-6 and led at the half by 30 points, 41-11. It wasn’t until 1:21 left in the half that the hapless Lady Jags broke double figures. By that time, Midwest City had built a 28-point lead. It was a big quarter for the Lady Bombers, scoring 26 points to Westmoore’s six.

Westmoore had their best quarter of the game in the third, scoring nine points. Unfortunately for them Midwest City scored 17 to lead 58-20 heading into the final stanza. Senior Ashley Clark led five Lady Bombers in scoring in the quarter with eight points.

Midwest City cleared the bench in the fourth quarter, but continued to increase their lead. With the win, the Lady Bombers improved their season record to 17-0.

“It was a total team effort tonight where we have a lot of defense,” Bode said. “You can look at the scoring and say this girl or that girl scored a whole bunch, but that’s not always indicative of who played the best because it’s the defense that got the easy lay-up and all that kind of stuff, so you may have a situation where a block and a quick rebound and the outlet pass are what gave some girl who is able to get out in front of everybody a lot of points and all they had to do was lay the ball up.”

For the game, Beard led all scorers with 20 points followed by Quemari Boyd with 12 and Clark and Adrianna White with 10 each. Others getting into the scoring column for included Reagan Widener with seven, Carolee Dillard with four, Valanesha Washington with three and Markita Zeigler and Tashawnya Edwards with two each.

Westmoore was led by Jami Hensley with seven, Rasheeda Kabbe with four, Kabrina Harkey and Jaclyn Downs with three each. Alysa Phillips finished the Lady Jaguar scoring with two.

The Lady Bombers hit 30 field goals, all from inside the three point line and were 10 of 21 from the free throw line.

Westmoore hit only nine shots from the field and were 6 of 17 from the line.

The Lady Bombers return to action Friday night when they travel to Southmoore for a 6:15 p.m. tipoff. They return home Tuesday to host Norman.
