Del City’s new police station almost complete
Construction of Del City’s new, state-ofthe-art police station should be complete by the end of February or early March, City Manager Mark Edwards said.
A move-in time will be late March to early April as furniture, fixtures and equipment are installed. City officials originally were given a bid of $3.6 million for the new station, but change orders caused the price tag to jump to about $3.8 million.
“We estimated it would be $4 million,” Edwards said.
The station, located at 4517 SE 29th , was funded with a one-and-a-half cent sales tax hike approved by voters in 2007. The police station will include a jail, dispatch center, locker rooms and showers for the officers, a self-contained evidence and property room, a laundry room for jail clothing and blankets and a card-swipe entry. Security camera will be installed inside and outside the facility.
The jail will have a drunk tank and four other cells: three for adult suspects and one for juvenile offenders. State law allows police to house only one juvenile per cell and two adults per cell.
The police station will be named the William Keith Haskell Memorial Building in honor of Del City’s only police officer to die in the line of duty. Haskell died in 1965 from injuries suffered in a crash while pursuing a suspect. He died one week after the accident occurred.
