125 Sunbeam Senior Volunteers Donate 200 Cans of Food As Part of Nationwide Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
125 Sunbeam Family Services’ Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent volunteers are taking the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Challenge by donating 200 food items to the Regional Food Bank. These weekly volunteers are joining citizens nationwide through the Corporation for National and Community Services (CNCS) to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King during the month of January.
Nationally, Senior Corps Projects engage their local communities with a Day of Service in honor of MLK Day. Individual projects coordinate volunteer plans that meet the needs of the Senior Corps volunteers and the need within the community they serve.
“Every week, our Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Volunteers are serving members of their community. During a recent in-service, they were alarmed to learn that one in four children in Oklahoma go to bed hungry at night,” explains Patrick O’Kane, Director of Senior Services for Sunbeam. “By donating food to our local food bank, they are going above and beyond to serve people in Oklahoma as well as honor Martin Luther King Jr.”
Sunbeam’s Senior Companion Program provides in-home support and companionship to 433 frail, elderly individuals and 109 caregivers, through volunteer companions, helping them maintain independence and avoid institutionalization. Sunbeam’s Foster Grandparent program recruits senior volunteers to work with schools, principals, and teachers to work one-on-one with elementary students to improve academic achievement in Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, Login, Garfield, Noble and Kay Counties.
